Cocktail of the Week: The Hurricane

On the 4th April 1913, the late great Muddy Waters was born in Mississippi and given the increasingly whimsically nature of our Cocktail of the Week, we thought it prudent to pair a delightful cocktail with a tribute to the great man himself. So without further ado here is a Hurricane Cocktail recipe and a few throwaway facts about the soulful and electrifying blues legend that is Muddy Waters…

Did you know: Alongside Robert Leroy Johnson, Muddy Waters is widely considered the greatest Blues singer of all time and amongst one of the most influential and enduringly talented musicians in history.

Muddy Waters was born in 1915 in McKinley Morganfield in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. After his mother’s death he was sent to live with his grandmother on the Stovall Plantation north of Clarksdale aged three, and it was here that he acquired the nickname “Muddy”, due to his penchant for playing in nearby creeks, rivers and puddles.

The Rolling Stones were named after Muddy Waters’ song, "Rollin' Stone", recorded in 1950. Inspired by the “father of modern Chicago blues”, founding member Brian Jones placed an advert in Jazz News, seeking musicians for a band modelled on The Muddy Waters Blues Band’s classic combo of rhythm and lead guitars, bass guitar, drums, harmonica, keyboards, and a vocalist. The rest is history.

In Keith Richards’ brilliant and acclaimed autobiography, Life, he articulated just how great an influence Muddy Waters and the Blues had on the Rolling Stones. Richards wrote: “We were in Mississippi. We’d been playing this music, and it had all been very respectful, but then we were actually there sniffing it. You want to be a blues player, the next minute you f*cking well are and you’re stuck right amongst them, and there’s Muddy Waters standing next to you. It happens so fast you really can’t register all of the impressions that are coming at you… It’s one thing to play a Muddy Waters song. It’s another thing to play with him.”

The Beatles referenced Muddy Waters in ‘Come Together’ - He's roller-coaster he's got early warning / He's got muddy water he's got mojo filter…

Martin Scorsese is a huge Muddy Waters fan and many of his songs have featured in the revered director’s films including The Color of Money, Goodfellas and Casino.

He is ranked No. 17 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

In addition to The Rolling Stones, some of the most recognisable names in music have cited Muddy Waters as one of their greatest influences, including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Johnny Winter.

He died after suffering a heart attack on April 30, 1983, in Downers Grove, Illinois.

BBQ Spatchcock Piri-Piri Chicken

Summer has come to a close and autumn is well and truly on its way. Blustering winds, cooler temperatures and swiftly shortening days mean it will soon be time to wrap up warm and to make the most of the wonderful autumn produce on offer. Time to say goodbye to those fresh, summer whites and replace them with the warmer, more robust reds frequently associated with colder temperatures.
