What’s Hot in the World of Wine: Terroir, Pinot Noir & Sauvignon Blanc locums





Once a fortnight, CellarVie Wines dives knee deep into the weekend’s newspapers in an effort to determine what’s hot in the world of wine. In this instalment, The Sunday Times explains the nuances of Terroir and winemaking in Mexico, The Daily Telegraph discuss a number of alternatives to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, The Observer highlights their three wines of the week, and the Daily Mail extol the virtues of Pinot Noir


Terroir and Mexico

“I tried never to use the word other than in plain-speaking discussions with experts on the effects of soil, geography, history and climate on the fermented juice of a crushed grape,” The esteemed Kate Spicer told The Sunday Times when discussing Terroir. Yet on trying some Mexican wine Spicer suggests the link with this inherently French concept was inevitable. “Mexico’s expression of itself in wine is intrinsically linked to a new pride in its own produce,” Spicer explains, “This generation of wine-makers is moving away from trying to ape European or South American styles to doing their own thing, something grounded in, yes, terroir.”

CellarVie Wines says: Spicer champions wine from Central and South America and there is real pertinence in that at the moment given some of the exciting and innovative winemaking in that part of the world. In addition to selecting a Petite Sirah (not to be confused with its cousin Syrah), she also recommends a white from Uruguay and a Brut Rosé from Brazil. Throw into the mix Argentina and Chile, and South and Central America is increasingly becoming a hotbed for superb winemakers saturated with some equally brilliant wines.

Alternatives to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

Susy Atkins of The Daily Telegraph discusses a number of alternatives to the tried and trusted, albeit perhaps overused, New Zealand sauvignon blanc, namely a Gewürztraminer from the East Coast, a Pinot Grigio from Waihopai River and a Riesling from Martinborough. According to the Telegraph stalwart “a look at other whites from this exciting, rapidly evolving country is long overdue,” and so she does.

CellarVie Wines says: New Zealand is rightly proud of its inherent association with superb sauvignon blanc but as Atkins points out there is plenty more on offer in the "Land of the long white cloud". Pinot Noir is evidently starting to make a name for itself, again incredibly fruity wines with plump and juicy red fruits being their hallmark. While Chardonnay is gaining better recognition, aromatic varieties like Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer from Marlborough can also be delicious.

Wines of week / We love Schubert Wines

The Observer’s regular wine journo David Williams recommends his three wines of the week; “A Spanish red with guts and bite, a peppery New Zealand red, and a stylish French white fashioned by a Dutchwoman”. One of those aforementioned bottles is a Syrah from New Zealand courtesy of Villa Maria, and Williams reserves particular praise for this iconic wine producer who is the country’s most acclaimed. “Reliable, yes, but never dull, they almost always come up with the goods and this peppery, pure, supple northern Rhône-like red is no exception,” according to Williams and the CellarVie Wines team would certainly encourage you to try some of their superb wines across their increasingly varied range.

CellarVie Wines says: In addition to Villa Maria, we are unanimous in our liking of all things Schubert; a small winery that producers outstanding, premium wines. While perhaps a little on the dearer side, we can’t recommend them highly enough. If you don’t want to take our word for it, the 'Block B' Pinot Noir 2008 was voted the best in the world in 2010, by a little-known publication called Decanter.

Pinot Noir

“Pinot Noir is fickle,” Claims Olly Smith of The Daily Mail, “I’ve always thought of it as the Diva – if the conditions aren’t perfect, you simply don’t get a performance.” Looking at Pinots at "more realistic" prices, Smith subsequently praises two bottles from Romania, one from Germany and another from Chile in his quest to recapture a Pinot Noir inspired moment from his youth, when he “cracked open a top-notch Clos Vougeot”.

CellarVie Wines says: We’ve already mentioned it, but we can’t talk about Pinot Noir without reiterating how good the Schubert 'Block B' Pinot Noir 2008, even if it is a penny shy of £29. If like the jovial Smith you are looking to be rather more austere, why not go for the ludicrously affordable Cono Sur Single Block Visión Pinot from the Colchagua Valley in Chile. It captures the essence of the grape superbly and has wonderful balance; it’s perfect with food.
