What We’re Drinking: Ben & Hendricks Gin

Given CellarVie Wines’ extensive collection it surprised me that none of the team had thus far stumped for a spirit for their What We’re Drinking selection. For me, it was something of a no-brainer because I have to admit gin is often my base alcohol of choice outside of wine and Hendricks Gin is both an interesting drink and an equally intriguing brand.

Hendricks have perpetually purported the idea of exclusivity and the quirky appearance of the old apothecary tincture bottle certainly sets it apart from some of their competitors, who have perhaps refrained from endeavouring to appeal to a younger audience.

Aside from Hendricks’ carefully constructed aura of nostalgia, bohemian sophistication and vintage appeal courtesy of its deliberate marketing and savvy branding, the gin itself is different from the norm.

Handcrafted with a traditional botanical signature of juniper, coriander, and citrus peel like most other gins, Hendricks then add an infusion of rose petals from Bulgaria and specially selected cucumbers after distillation to produce its unique aroma.

It’s certainly not to everyone’s liking and to gin purists and those who prefer Gordon’s or Tanqueray, it’s possibly a bit funky on the palate. Hendricks is not your archetypal gin and as such I wouldn’t necessarily recommend its use in a staple gin and tonic simply because of its idiosyncratic flavour. That being said, adding Hendricks to variations on the aforementioned quintessentially British tipple, such as this week’s Cocktail of the Week, certainly has its merits.

If that is not to your liking, Hendricks is perfect in a Martini due to its palate cleansing freshness and it also adds a nice kick to a summer Pimm’s if your mood requires it.

Hendricks may never serve as a direct replacement for your normal gin of choice, but it brings something unique to the table, is definitely worth trying, and I would thoroughly recommend it while the weather is set fair.

BBQ Spatchcock Piri-Piri Chicken

Summer has come to a close and autumn is well and truly on its way. Blustering winds, cooler temperatures and swiftly shortening days mean it will soon be time to wrap up warm and to make the most of the wonderful autumn produce on offer. Time to say goodbye to those fresh, summer whites and replace them with the warmer, more robust reds frequently associated with colder temperatures.

What to drink with Fish Pie?

Fish Pie is a quintessentially British recipe. Easy to make and absolutely delicious, it is also a great dinner party dish - with a limited amount of last minute preparations needed it’s a winner in my book! However, where do you start when matching a fish pie with wine?
