What We’re Drinking: Ben & Flagstone Longitude

After a protracted and perhaps cowardly attempt to get someone else to do it and following a number of curt responses, it dawned on me that I had successfully avoided writing my ‘What We’re Drinking’ since arriving at CellarVie Wines. It was my turn and sitting in an office full of wine experts it was a daunting proposition. Suffice to say I set about recalling the wines that I had tried over the last month or so, and kept coming back to the lengthily named Flagstone Longitude Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz-Malbec 2010.

I first tasted this South African red from the Western Cape on an unusually balmy Friday afternoon in March, courtesy of one of Simon’s (commonly referred to as Mr Robins) impromptu wine tastings in the office.

While my evidently immature palate is very much a work in progress, to me the Flagstone Longitude, and I mean this as a compliment, is a wine that is beautifully attainable.

At £8.49 a bottle it is affordable without compromising on taste or quality and personally it embodies the perfect social drinking wine - the type of bottle I would happily take to a friend’s house for dinner or merely drink after a long day at work.

Not flashy but certainly not underwhelming either, the tasting notes for this Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz-Malbec blend, cite rich, dark, berry flavours and they are definitely descriptions I can empathise with yet not be overawed by.

While many in the CellarVie Wines office have successfully married their ‘What We’re Drinking’ with a delicious recipe, I’m simply not equipped to do so due to my lack of ability in the kitchen, but I would thoroughly recommend this wine and at any time of year. It has an effortlessly genial charm, tastes delicious and is great value for money.

BBQ Spatchcock Piri-Piri Chicken

Summer has come to a close and autumn is well and truly on its way. Blustering winds, cooler temperatures and swiftly shortening days mean it will soon be time to wrap up warm and to make the most of the wonderful autumn produce on offer. Time to say goodbye to those fresh, summer whites and replace them with the warmer, more robust reds frequently associated with colder temperatures.

What to drink with Fish Pie?

Fish Pie is a quintessentially British recipe. Easy to make and absolutely delicious, it is also a great dinner party dish - with a limited amount of last minute preparations needed it’s a winner in my book! However, where do you start when matching a fish pie with wine?
