What We're Drinking: Jon & ‘Piluna’ Primitivo





During my fledgling career in the wine industry, I have found the hosting of a wine tasting a perennially difficult balancing act. You want to select a suitably eclectic array of wines that not only spark healthy debate or mutual appreciation, but more importantly a selection of wines that titillate the taste buds. The Piluna Primitivo is one of our 'bankers'; a thus far universally enjoyed wine at CellarVie that is yet to disappoint.
 
As Zinfandel's Italian cousin, Primitivo has noticeable similarities to 'Zin', but with a more rustic quality to it. A grape that thrives in the Puglia region of Italy (the heel of the boot), the climate allows for earthy, rich flavoured wines which in recent years has seen demand for Primitivo escalate.
 
Castello Monaci's Primitivo is a fantastic introduction to Italian wine in general. Produced entirely from Primitivo grapes, the 'Piluna' is full bodied with ripe black fruit and an intense spicy character of pepper and toasty vanilla. Very generous and roundly structured, it’s delicious and in my opinion one of the best value for money reds from Italy!
 
While this flavoursome wine can be enjoyed on its own, I found it a lovely accompaniment to a stew or roast lamb. For optimum taste, open the bottle and let it breath for an hour prior to serving.
