Ideas for Mother’s Day

It’s Mother’s Day this Sunday and so it’s that time of year to make your mum feel special. With that in mind CellarVie Wines thought they would offer up a few suggestions to do just that. Now you may not buy in to the commercialisation and hype surrounding the day itself, but in essence the message remains the same; show your mum how much you appreciate her!

Taking your mum out for a Mother’s Day lunch is a classic and you can always cook for her at home (see our food and wine blog idea) but what about taking her out to a movie, the theatre or a concert instead?

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is out in cinemas at the moment and with a cast that boasts the likes of Dames Judy Dench and Maggie Smith, as well British movie stalwarts Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson, it could tick all the right boxes for your mum. Based on the best-selling novel, These Foolish Things, by Deborah Moggachas, the film is quintessentially British and ideal viewing for a relaxed Sunday afternoon.

If the cinema is not to your mum’s liking, you could perhaps take her to London for the day to see a show; Mamma Mia is always a fun option for the ladies who like a good musical or if your mum likes something a bit more serious, Tyne Daly (of Cagney and Lacy and Judge Judy fame) is on in the West End at the moment in “Masterclass”, a play about Maria Callas which has played to rave reviews.

Pampering is always a good option; whether you get her a voucher for a makeover, a facial or a manicure and pedicure, you are always going to win – even better if you can join her. Check out the packages at your local hair and beauty salon as they are bound to have a deal that will make her feel suitably spoiled this weekend.

Flowers for Mother’s Day are a nice and traditional option but we all know that whether stressed or happy, every mum tends to love a glass of wine. Smack the Pony’s light hearted sketch on mums is both funny and revealing, and while we are not promoting over-indulgence or more pertinently over-consumption, we can recommend a few lovely bottles of wine to make her feel special on Mother’s Day.

If your mum likes a glass of Pinot Grigio, why not buy her something a bit more special of Mother’s Day – try a Verdicchio or a Gavi di Gavi. They have the same smooth fruit but a bit more concentration and depth to them. If she likes a glass of rosé push the boat out and buy her a Sancerre Rosé; light and crisp it is dry and delicate and will go down a treat with some lovely prawns or a plate of smoked salmon.

For a good glass of fizz you should perhaps spend a bit more on Sunday and go forChampagne – we can certainly recommend our Besserat de Belfon NV. And if it’s a nice smooth Merlot she likes why not give her something a little different and try a blend? Merlot is so versatile and there are loads of different combinations which work well with Merlot, such as Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon.

To help make your mum a happy bunny this weekend, why not buy her a CellarVie Wines E-Voucher

BBQ Spatchcock Piri-Piri Chicken

Summer has come to a close and autumn is well and truly on its way. Blustering winds, cooler temperatures and swiftly shortening days mean it will soon be time to wrap up warm and to make the most of the wonderful autumn produce on offer. Time to say goodbye to those fresh, summer whites and replace them with the warmer, more robust reds frequently associated with colder temperatures.
