Is it true? Will a glass of red wine a night help diabetics?

A new study carried out over two years by the US and Israeli researchers has concluded that a glass of red wine a night may help protect the heart of those with diabetes. The survey tracked the progress of 224 diabetics over the two year period, and it discovered that red wine drinkers could experience an increase in their ‘good’ cholesterol, or HDL.

Diabetics often have low levels of HDL, which is crucial in helping to remove ‘bad’ cholesterol, or LDL.

HDL, or ‘good’ cholesterol, is considered to improve heart health, and is said to protect against heart attacks and strokes. The patients tested in the study all followed a Mediterranean-style diet and were divided into three groups: those who drank a small glass (150ml) of red wine with dinner, those who drank a small glass of white wine and those who drank mineral water.

The study, led by Professor Iris Shai of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel found that those patients who drank a small glass of red wine as part of a healthy diet improved their metabolic profile.

High in fibre Tempranillo grapes (most commonly found in Rioja) are said to be the best at helping reduce that ‘bad cholesterol, LDL.

The jury is still out on how good wine is for your health, but it is said to have multiple benefits, which we have discussed here. These health benefits have been proved and disproved by many scientists all over the world, and each theory is based on consumption in moderation.
