London Cocktail Week: Spirit Offers

Ingredients

Flute Glass
1 shot The Macallan Gold
2 shots Ruby Port
2 barspoons Crème de Cassis Liqueur
2 barspoons Monin Vanilla Syrup
1 Small Organic Egg
Garnish with Freshly Grated Nutmeg

Method

Shake all ingredients with cubed ice for 12 seconds, fine strain into chilled cocktail glass.
 
The Macallan, founded in 1824, was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. Alexander Reid, a barley farmer, leased eight acres of land from the Earl of Seafield to establish the now world-famous Macallan distillery.
 
Running alongside Amber, Sienna and Ruby, The Macallan Gold is part of The 1824 Series; the no-age-statement range from the famous Speyside distillery. These names reflect the natural colours of the whiskies themselves. With this focus on colour, the quality and expense of the oak casks was of paramount importance and the whiskies are exclusively matured in sherry oak casks from Jerez, Spain. In fact, the Macallan alone accounts for some 65% of the fresh sherry seasoned oak casks, the most expensive of all, that are imported into Scotland for maturing whisky.
 
Bob Dalgarno, the Macallan Whisky Maker commented: “The Macallan world of colour is the true inspiration of the 1824 Series. Using colour to drive and define a whisky differs dramatically from the conventional age approach, allowing us to explore different casks and take a more flexible approach to our stock. We have been able to work creatively with the full range of matured stock available, rather than working to a pre-determined character based on age. For me, the key thought in this range is that a great single malt doesn’t need to be 30 years old to taste like a 30 year old.”
 
[Macallan] Gold is weightier than Fine Oak 10 year old, richer and longer in the finish, and exudes fresh, fruity class and sophistication. All in all, it is, indeed, gold.

The Macallan Gold
 
Colour – burnished gold
 
ABV – 40%
 
Nose – Lemon citrus, then orange peel and an interlacing sweetness that softens but doesn’t eliminate the zest. A quiet note of vanilla is followed by dark chocolate with lingering floral and light oak notes
 
Palate – citrus and boiled sweets rule the palate, along with hints of ginger and cinnamon, while soft oak tones reveal toasted apples
 
Finish – medium sweet, malty and slightly dry

Fun Fact: Cire Perdue, The Macallan’s oldest existing single malt at 64 years old, broke the Guinness World Record selling for $460,000 at Sotheby’s in New York
