Pinot Noir induced pigs thrive over vodka persuaded counterparts

While by no means a major breakthrough for heavy drinkers, new research suggests pinot noir - a light to medium-bodied red wine – has better health benefits than vodka.

According to a Rhode Island Hospital study, both red wine and vodka can benefit the heart but the former offers greater cardiovascular benefits.

The team of scientists, whose findings will be published in the September issue of the journal Circulation, studied the effects of red wine and vodka on pigs with high cholesterol levels. Results indicated that red wine dilates blood vessels and vodka induces collateral vessels and therefore both are working wonders on the heart. However, after seven weeks of observing the now presumably drunk porkies, the researchers noted the cardiovascular improvements.

While the positive effects of moderate red wine consumption is not a new thing, with various studies unearthing the antioxidant, pro-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties, the results are certainly further evidence that wine has an element of healing prowess.

"There has been previous research touting the benefits of moderate consumption of wine, but we wanted to test the effects of both wine and vodka in conjunction with high cholesterol as those who would be in this at-risk patient population typically have other medical issues, such as high cholesterol." Frank Sellke, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals and the study's principal investigator said, "What we found is that moderate consumption of both alcohols may reduce cardiovascular risk, but that red wine may offer increased protection due to its anti-oxidant properties."

In addition to the aforementioned findings, the scientists determined that HDL, or good cholesterol, was significantly increased in the two alcohol-treated groups, while total cholesterol levels were unaffected.

HDL cholesterol transports LDL (bad cholesterol) to the liver where it is metabolized, which may assist in preventing hardening of the arteries, and other associated cardiac issues.

Merlot can rest easy as ‘no-brainer’ Sideways sequel is a ‘non-starter’

“Brilliantly observed characters with uniformly terrific performances; this is wonderful, original stuff." So said Empire Magazine in their five star review of Alexander Payne’s critically acclaimed film, Sideways, which grossed well over $100 million globally, earned five Academy Award nominations, winning one for Best Adapted Screenplay, and has since been regularly championed as one of the greatest independent movies ever made. Given Hollywood’s recent habit of superfluous cinematic repetitions and studio executives perennially pedalling of sequels, one could be forgiven for assuming there would be an unquenchable thirst to make Sideways 2, particularly when you consider the original was made for a meagre $12 million? Not so, says Sideways’ author Rex Pickett.
