Cocktail of the Week: Hendricks Gimlet

Each week CellarVie Wines are keen to whet their whistle on a specially selected cocktail to spice up a Thursday night and today is no different. Our Cocktail of the Week revolves around our Spirit of the Month, Hendricks Gin, and this week why not kick back and make yourself a Hendricks Gimlet.

Did you know: Traditionally made with Gin and lime juice although sometimes replaced with Vodka, the first use of the word gimlet in a cocktail context was in 1928, when it was described as being the following: "gin, a spot of lime, and soda" (D. B. Wesson, I'll Never be Cured III) .

The origins of the association between the aforementioned concoction and the word gimlet are not precisely known, although there are various theories, one being the cocktail was named after a gimlet drill because of the drink’s sharp penetrating effect on the drinker.

Another theory suggests the cocktail is named Surgeon General Sir Thomas D. Gimlette of the British Royal Navy, who used to serve the drink as an anti-scurvy medication in the late 1800s.

Hendricks Gimlet

Ingredients

60ml Hendricks Gin

Large shot lime cordial

½ shot of water

Method

Add the Hendricks gin, lime cordial and half a small shot of water to a cocktail shaker filled with two thirds ice.

Stir well and strain into a Martini glass.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Buy a bottle of Hendricks Gin from CellarVie Wines this month and you will earn double loyalty points.

Wines for a Thanksgiving Turkey

Although Thanksgiving is an American National Holiday, it is becoming an increasingly popular celebration on the fourth Thursday of November in the UK too, whether it be with expats from across the pond, or simply because it’s a good excuse to have a party. It is the end of November after all; that strange middle ground where singing Christmas songs is still frowned upon (just a few more days, Jon!) and the warming tipples and bright lights of Bonfire Night seem a distant memory…

Cocktail of the Week: Bee's Knees

The Bee’s Knees cocktail dates back to the prohibition. It is said that the addition of lemon and honey to this cocktail played a key part in masking the unpleasant smell of cheaply and illegally procured “bathtub gin”.

Wine Braised Chicken

Styled on the iconic Julia Child’s Coq au Vin and using a bottle of Pinot Noir, this recipe is from the blog glamorousbite, whose mouth wateringly good photos and recipes are enough to persuade you to pop out and buy all the necessary ingredients in a flash. A mother-daughter duo from California, these two are passionate about both food and wine, no doubt helped by their close proximity to Californian wine country.

I made this last night as an alternative to my usual fave long drink, GLS (gin, lime & soda).

You really need a good gin for this, where the flavour shines over the lime. No Beefeater for this cocktail!

It got me thinking about the quality of lime cordial - and i found this excellent article on what should be used for a Gimlet. And a recipe for making your own lime cordial - which i shall be trying ASAP!
