Spirit of the Month: Hendricks Gin

Each month CellarVie Wines celebrates a Spirit of the Month by recommending four cocktails, one each week, that best showcase the unique flavours of the spirit in question. CellarVie Wines are proud to promote Hendricks Gin for the month of May.

Produced by one of the world’s best malt whisky distillers and third largest in Scotland, William Grant & Sons, Hendricks is a handcrafted gin with a traditional botanical signature of juniper, coriander, and citrus peel, but most intriguingly and a notable exception from the norm, they use the aforementioned ingredients as a “function to complement” their unique infusion of rose petals from Bulgaria and specially selected cucumbers from the finest producers.

The resulting concoction is not only an enhanced variant on the classical taste of gin but more pertinently Hendricks produces a distinctively exceptional spirit with a fresh, floral and aromatic flavour that has a silky smooth finish.

Priding itself on its exclusivity and quirky appearance – the old apothecary tincture bottle would not look out of place at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in Alice in Wonderland and it is indeed often served in quaint little teacups – Hendricks has cleverly managed to align itself with a certain bohemian sophistication and a notion of 19th century elegance and grandeur, despite its conception a little over a decade ago.

The carefully constructed aura of nostalgia is evidently a testament to their very deliberate and superbly executed marketing ploy, but Hendricks’ vintage appeal is also a legacy of their production methods and in particular the blend of spirits produced from a Carter-Head Still, which was constructed in 1948, and a small pot still, originally built in 1860 by Bennett, Sons & Shears. The resulting gin is a blend of the two that is later enhanced with the aforementioned essences of cucumber and rose petals.

Buy a bottle of Hendricks Gin from CellarVie Wines this month and you will earn double loyalty points.

Cocktail of the Week: The Poinsettia

“The rising tide lifts all the boats.” ― John F. Kennedy

The 35th President of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald exactly 49-years-ago today and while his aforementioned declaration inevitably had far loftier and more pertinent intentions than our own, we wanted to revel in them nonetheless. So why not rejoice in the looming and hopefully happily lapping tides of a fun-filled weekend by pouring yourself a premature but no doubt well-deserved cocktail. CellarVie Wines’ Cocktail of the Week is the suitably festive The Poinsettia.

Cocktail of the Week: Tequila Sunrise

The inimitable Charles Bukowski once wrote the following in relation to the degenerating and monotonous capacity of a daily ‘9 to 5’ job:

“What hurts is the steadily diminishing humanity of those fighting to hold jobs they don't want but fear the alternative worse. People simply empty out. They are bodies with fearful and obedient minds. The colour leaves the eye. The voice becomes ugly. And the body. The hair. The fingernails. The shoes. Everything does."

Thursday is so dangerously close to the weekend that CellarVie Wines often tend to be hankering for a drink by the close of play. The week’s back is broken, Friday night looms, and we are usually in buoyant mood as the weekend approaches.

What We’re Drinking: Ben & Hendricks Gin

Given CellarVie Wines’ extensive collection it surprised me that none of the team had thus far stumped for a spirit for their What We’re Drinking selection. For me, it was something of a no-brainer because I have to admit gin is often my base alcohol of choice outside of wine and Hendricks Gin is both an interesting drink and an equally intriguing brand.
